Chattanooga Film Festival 2024: Top reasons for every horror-lover
Smells like… Twilight Zone
The Chattanooga Film Festival (CFF) promises to bring the essence of The Twilight Zone this year! In fact, festival director, Chris Dortch II, said “Rod Serling and The Twilight Zone’s influence will be felt in eerie ways throughout this year’s festival.” The most famous genre horror and sci-fi television series will make its mark this year in CFF with the presence of Anne Serling, author and daughter of Rod Serling, who, along with historian/author Mark Dawidziak, will attend the screening of her father’s favorite episodes, as well as panels talking about the vast legacy and perpetual influence of this iconic series.
Dangerous Visions & So Long and Thanks For All the Dangerous Visions
“Dangerous Visions”, the “dark heart” of the festival, as it is called. The famous block that highlights the most interesting short films, comes back for another year, curated by the brilliant writer Harlan Ellison. For this year, however, there were so many horror and sci-fi creations that they decided to expand the block and create the virtual “So Long, and Thanks For All the Dangerous Visions”. Even more movies, even more horror, even better for us.
The ode we want: Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
If you are a cult fan and a horror fan, this one is for you. You should not miss the screening of the cult classic “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” This 1965 gem throws you into a desert landscape where three go-go dancers unleash chaos. Director Russ Meyer masterfully blends car chases, outrageous outfits, and a darkly funny plot into a cinematic explosion. While the story may be wild, “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” is a sharp commentary on gender roles and a celebration of female power, all delivered with a wink and a punch. Don’t miss this chance to rediscover a film that’s equal parts outrageous and enthralling.
The Specials
Among the events of CFF 2024 stands out the “Poe Things: An Edgar Allan Show“, an event that will explore the death and life of the beloved poet. It will contain a secret screening of one of the greatest film adaptations of POE’s work, a live Poe-formance and even another opportunity for guests to get a book they’ll surely love signed by the author, Poe biographer Mark Dawidziak and his essential “A Mystery of Mysteries: The Death and Life of Edgar Allan Poe”(the book was recently chosen by Barnes & Noble as its March non-fiction title of the month).
Even More Movies
The Chattanooga Film Festival 2024 has a very rich screening schedule this year*, both in-person and virtual. You can find it here. We, of course, have singled out – among many many others – the following.
“Video Vision”, Michael Turney’s retrotech romance about a woman who unlocks the dark dimension of Dr. Analog through an old VCR.
“Somnium”, Racheal Cain’s new feature film, where the premise reads “at experimental sleep clinic, Somnium, your dreams are made real. Side effects may include: hallucinations, confusion, paranoia, sleep paralysis, detachment from reality, lost sense of self, permanent nightmares.”
And definitely “The Fix”, “a dark, dystopian thrill ride with an environmental slant. The film explores identity, perception and autonomy in a frighteningly viable future. A toxic compound infects earth’s atmosphere. Pharmaceutical giant, Aethera, sells immunity to those who can afford the daily dose… most can’t. When a troubled model takes a new designer drug at a house party, she suffers a shocking transformation. Pursued by a dangerous gang and authorities in cahoots with Aethera, she hunts desperately for a “fix” to reverse the drug’s effects… only to discover that her mutations could save the human race.”
