October 31st, a date both inconsequential and pivotal in its own right. To some, it was just another day on the calendar, devoid of any significance. But for others, especially the children, this day held immense power. A day when they meticulously prepared for months, crafting the most spooky masks and costumes. Every year, they strive to outdo their previous spooky costume’s dark creation, all in anticipation of uttering that enchanting phrase: “Trick or treat?”
Among these children, there was Peter. While his peers basked in the summer sun, Peter was holed up in his room, from dawn till dusk, crafting what he proudly dubbed his “ULTRA SPOOKY” costume. His mother, Emilia, tried to coax him out, but her pleas fell on deaf ears.
“Peter, please come out! Dinner is ready! You haven’t eaten anything all day!” she begged, her voice laced with concern.
Peter was a silent child, a master of expression through his eyes alone. His eyes could reveal more than words ever could.
Peter’s Obsession
October 30th arrived, and Peter burst from his room, excitement radiating from his eyes. “Mother, look, my SUPER SPOOKY costume is finally ready!” he exclaimed. He had stayed up all night to complete his masterpiece – a dark cape adorned with ominous red dots and a terrifying white mask featuring menacing teeth and dark, soulless eyes.
Emilia sighed with relief, “Nice, Peter. Now come, eat something, and get some rest. You were up all night.”
The Quest for Candy Begins
October 31st had dawned, and Peter could hardly contain his excitement. This was the day he had been waiting for, the day to collect buckets full of candy from every door he knocked on.
Clad in his super spooky costume, he embarked on his adventure. The first house he approached yielded no response….
The second house was equally silent. Panic gripped him.
“Where is everyone? What’s happening? Who am I going to scare?” Peter wondered…
After several failed attempts, Peter found himself at a house atop a hill, determined to fill his bag to the brim with candy. He knocked, knocking again and again.
Finally, the door creaked open, revealing an elderly lady.
“Trick or treat?” Peter said with unbridled excitement.
“I’m sorry, young boy, but I’ve already given all my treats to other children. Maybe next year,” the old lady replied before closing the door.
Peter’s eyes filled with a mixture of anger and tears. All his hard work, all the time he had invested during the summer, amounted to nothing. Not a single piece of candy!
Frustrated, he removed his costume and throw it into the river near the last house he visited. Disheartened, he returned home, feeling utterly defeated.
But some things are not meant to be discarded, never meant to remain lifeless. Such was the fate of his Halloween costume. It took on a life of its own, determined to fulfill Peter’s desires.
Peter was so disappointed and sad, that he promised to never celebrate Halloween again, while he was angrily throwing his costume left-overs to the trashcan.
The Discarded Costume’s Revenge
An hour later a sinister voice echoed in the neighborhood: “Trick or treat?”
The old lady, unimpressed, opened her door again, “Hey, you again? I told you, my dear, I have no candies left. I shared them earlier.”
In a surreal, nightmarish moment, the costume sprang to life, lunging at the old lady with a spiteful intent. After the costume spread to the air, the woman’s eyes were gone, leaving vacant sockets that stared into an unfathomable darkness…
Meanwhile, Peter lay on his bed, drowned in disappointment. His pillow soaked with tears, a sense of despair consumed him. Yet, a mysterious presence lurked nearby. Peter, unafraid for some unknown reason, approached his window. There was a shadowy figure in the shape of his Halloween costume.
“Oh my God, what are you doing here?” Peter wondered as he spotted his costume, resting on a chair in the corner of his room. Beside it lay a bucket of Halloween candy, almost overflowing…but there was no candy in it…
He opened it to discover a gruesome assortment of human body parts – eyes, hands, legs, even an ear. Yet, he remained strangely unafraid. He had successfully filled his bag with “candies.”
Overwhelmed with a twisted sense of victory, Peter strolled into the kitchen to join his family.
Emilia noticed his newfound smile. “Finally, I see you smiling! What happened, Peter?”
Peter grinned, “I’m happy, Mother, because I have the best Halloween costume in the world! Now, I can have as many buckets of goodies as I want! Would you like some?”
