The wind whispered through the towering pines as Samuel and Elise strolled hand-in-hand through the cobbled streets of Nyord. Their love was the kind of love that travelers envied—always exploring, always lost in each other. Nyord had called them with its ancient charm and unsettling rumors. The locals spoke in hushed tones of a fountain deep within the woods, a fountain that could grant a single wish. The legend warned, though, of one forbidden wish: to bring someone back from the dead.
The Enchanting Mystery of Nyord
One evening, under a fading sun, the couple found the fountain nestled in the heart of a foggy glen. It shimmered under the moonlight like a mirror to another world, rippling softly as if it had secrets to share. They felt its pull—the lure of endless possibilities.
A voice broke the spell.
“You must not go in.”
They turned to see an old monk, his robes swaying gently in the evening breeze. His eyes were ancient, full of sorrow and warnings untold.
Samuel frowned. “Why not? It’s just water, isn’t it?”
The monk’s gaze bore into them. “The fountain grants wishes, but at a terrible cost. You must promise me you will never ask for what is forbidden.”
“Forbidden?” Elise asked, her curiosity piqued.
“To bring someone back from the dead. That wish will twist the fabric of life and death itself. No good can come from it.”
Samuel and Elise exchanged uneasy glances. There were so many unspoken dreams between them, but this wish… no, they would not make it. With heavy hearts, they left the fountain behind, promising never to speak of it again.
Three years passed.
Tragedy Strikes
They were still the perfect couple, until a rainy night shattered everything. The car crash was sudden, brutal. When Samuel awoke in the hospital, he was told the truth that felt like a knife to his soul—Elise was gone.
Grief consumed him like a dark fog. Days became indistinguishable from nights. He stopped eating, sleeping, moving. Friends tried to comfort him, but nothing could fill the void that Elise had left behind.
Then, one sleepless night, a memory surfaced—Nyord, the fountain. The monk’s warning echoed in his mind, but despair drowned it out. What did he care for rules? Elise was all he had ever wanted, and she was gone.
With trembling hands, he packed his bag and booked a flight to Nyord.
The Forbidden Desire
He returned to the woods alone, the journey a blur of haunted thoughts. The fountain stood as it had before, untouched by time, its water shimmering with an almost unnatural light. His chest tightened, and for a moment, he hesitated. But grief had made him reckless. Samuel stepped into the fountain, the water freezing against his skin as he whispered his wish: “Bring back my love.”
He collapsed on the ground afterward, spent and broken. That night, he slept for the first time in months, his dreams thick with memories of Elise.
The next morning, he woke to the sound of humming. His heart froze. He stumbled to his feet, the room spinning, and there she was—Elise, standing in the kitchen, just as she always had.
“Sam?” Her voice was soft, familiar, but something was wrong. Her eyes, once filled with warmth, seemed… empty.
He rushed to her, pulling her into his arms. “Elise… is it really you?”
She smiled, but it was a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Of course. I’m home, love.”
At first, Samuel wanted to believe it was her. He ignored the coldness of her touch, the way her smile stretched a little too wide. But over the next few days, the differences became impossible to overlook.
Elise Returns, but Something is Wrong
Her laughter was hollow, as if she didn’t remember how to laugh. She would sit in the dark for hours, just staring at him with unblinking eyes. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, he would hear her whispering to someone, but when he’d check, she was alone.
One evening, as they ate dinner, she dropped her fork, and when Samuel bent to pick it up, he saw her feet weren’t touching the ground. She was hovering, ever so slightly, above the floor. His heart pounded in terror.
He couldn’t take it anymore. This wasn’t Elise. It was something else, something dark that wore her face.
Samuel knew there was only one place left to go.
He led her back to the fountain under the guise of a walk, his heart heavy with dread. They stood at the edge of the water, the fountain reflecting their distorted images.
“Sam,” Elise’s voice broke the silence, her eyes glistening with an unnatural light. “Why are we here?”
“I… I just wanted us to be together, forever,” Samuel whispered. His voice cracked as he added, “There’s one last thing you need to do. Make a wish.”
A Final Wish
She tilted her head, eyes narrowing. “A wish?”
“Yes. We can be together, but not here. In another place… where souls meet again. Just wish for us to vanish forever.”
Elise stared at him, her expression unreadable. Then, slowly, she turned to the fountain. “I wish… for us to vanish.”
The world around them seemed to still, and for a moment, there was silence—absolute, deafening silence. Then, a soft ripple spread through the water, swallowing their reflection.
Samuel closed his eyes as the cold darkness took hold. There was nothing left but the fountain, alone in its eternal silence, and the memory of a love that had been consumed by grief and despair.
