18 December: Today in Horror History
Steven Spielberg was born
Today in 1946 Steven Spielberg was born. He’s a cinematic legend, has dipped his toes into the horror genre with thrilling results. He brought us “Jaws” (1975), turning a giant shark into everyone’s ocean nightmare and reshaping horror cinema. Then there’s “Poltergeist” (1982), which he produced, blending ghostly frights with family drama. Spielberg’s touch in horror is like his movies: unforgettable, innovative, and spine-tingling. He’s not just about adventure; he knows how to scare us too!
Ghost Story was released in 1981
Directed by John Irvin, this film is based on the novel by Peter Straub. It weaves a tale of four elderly men who share a dark secret and gather to tell ghost stories. Their past comes back to haunt them in the form of a vengeful spirit. Starring Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and John Houseman, the film combines elements of suspense, mystery, and supernatural horror. “Ghost Story” stands out for its atmospheric storytelling and the haunting performances of its veteran cast, making it a must-watch for fans of classic horror.
NASA Captured Spectacular Fireball Explosion Over Bering Sea
On December 18, 2018, a massive meteor, known as a “fireball” for its exceptional brightness, exploded approximately 16 miles above the Bering Sea. This explosion released an estimated 173 kilotons of energy, over ten times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. NASA’s Terra satellite captured this extraordinary event with two instruments. The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) recorded the event a few minutes after it occurred, showing the meteor’s trail and its shadow cast on cloud tops. Additionally, the Moderate Resolution Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MODIS) captured a true-color image of the meteor’s remnants. Despite being the most powerful meteor observed since 2013, its high altitude and remote location meant it posed no threat to anyone on the ground. The Terra spacecraft, managed by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and carrying the MISR instrument from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, continues to provide valuable data on such celestial events.
