Previously: Lorie’s successive bizarre encounters are unfolding. Will she manage to overcome her shock and finally remember?
Lorie: “I just remembered,” she said, and in that exact moment, all her past memories of Lake Santeetlah surged through her mind like shadows swirling around a nocturnal fire.
Mark: “What’s wrong, love? You’re trembling.”
As Lorie attempted to recount her first encounter with that entity, the phone interrupted, bringing a disquieting mist upon her emotions. It was her mother, in pieces. Tears poured like a torrent from her eyes.
“Your father… has passed away.”
Lorie struggled to regain composure from the initial shock. Now, she found herself back at that lake, hunting for the beloved pink azaleas. She glimpsed her parents arranging things for a picnic, serene and content. Yet, in a blink, she witnessed a dark presence enveloping her father. His scream silenced as the shadowy wave surged into his lungs, consuming him.
Her mother’s tears yanked Lorie back to the harsh reality.
Lorie: “We’re on our way, Mom. Hold on, okay?”
Racing Against Time
Gathering essentials, they headed straight for North Carolina. The eight-hour drive loomed, affording Lorie the chance to unveil to Mark the haunting past events from when she was eight.
As Lorie recounted her past and the horrors she confronted, night descended, with only a few cars dotting the I-95 route to North Carolina. Initially skeptical, Mark bombarded her with questions.
Mark: “Who was this Lake Lady? What happened to the others?”
Lorie: “I told you, they were all gone. I can’t furnish all the answers now.”
The Haunting Voice
Annoyed, she switched on the radio, hoping for some soothing music. Instead, she heard an weird sound beneath the water—a voice, her father’s voice.
Lorie’s Father: “Sweet pumpkin?”
Tears streaming, Lorie replied, “Dad? Dad, is that you?”
Lorie’s Father: “My sweet pumpkin, it’s dark and cold here. I can’t reach the surface. Help me, please, help me.”
Lorie: “Dad, I’m here, grab my hand!”
But as she tried to pull him up, the creature, with its octopus-like hair and sinister yellow eyes, intervened, dragging her father back into the depths.
Lorie awoke, gasping for air, fighting an unseen force, as if she were hauling someone to the surface. The radio played a tranquil melody.
Mark: “It was just a nightmare, darling. You dozed off for a while; you’re exhausted.”
Lorie: “The dream felt so real. That creature, it’s coming for me, I can sense it.”
Mark: “Don’t talk nonsense, sweet pumpkin.”
Lorie: “How did you call me?”
Mark: “Sweet pumpkin. I don’t know why it slipped out.”
Lorie: “That’s what my dad used to call me.”
As they approached the end of the I-95 route, nearing their destination, Lorie’s phone buzzed—a peculiar message from an unknown sender.
Mysterious Message
Unknown: "You don't know me, but I know you. You were that little girl during the Lake incident years ago. Call me when you see this message. We might have more in common than you imagine."
Lorie dialed the number, but silence greeted her. Mark tried to reassure her, suggesting it might be a prank or a wrong number. Yet deep within, she sensed this was just the start.
